Different Types of Terracotta Pottery

We have standard pots if you’re looking for a standard one. However, we’ve also got unique terracotta plant pots such as the Garden Bowl. The bowl is a great option if your plant needs more room to spread its roots, but If your plant wants additional room to spread out its roots, you may consider a Tall Pot. These are longer than the Standard Pot, so there is more room for the plant to grow out. We also sell Window Box planters, which are another unique and great option for your plants. These planters not only allow more room for your plants to spread out, but these planters allow you to plant more. With a standard pot, you typically can fit only one plant inside. But with a Window Box, you have more freedom to add in additional plants.

Along with our Terracotta Pottery in Patchogue NY, we have a few saucers available for sale. We have saucers available in Rectangle, Clay, and Glazed varieties. These don’t have room for plants to grow out, yet they are excellent for displaying plants. Like our potted plants, these saucers can be tailored to a variety of sizes.

What is Terracotta?

Terracotta literally means “baked earth” in Italian. This makes sense as that’s essentially what it is. Terracotta pottery often takes on a reddish-brown hue, which is a result of the high temperatures and the iron in the clay reacting to the extreme heat. These reactions produce the signature color of terracotta pottery.

Terracotta is one of the oldest types of pottery. Archaeologists have found pieces of terracotta that are thousands and thousands of years old. Ancient terracotta was left in the sun to harden, but as technology became more advanced, potters would use a kiln to bake their terracotta pottery.

The raw materials used to produce terracotta pottery are very abundant. It is clay mixed with iron oxide and flux material, and there are many different types of flux materials that can be used, each with different effects. The overall use of flux in terracotta pottery is to create a glass-like structure in the pottery, which combines the materials together, creating a coating on the surface of the pot.

Is Terracotta Pottery the same as ceramic pottery?

Terracotta is ceramic, but not all ceramics are terracotta. Ceramic refers to a hardened material that is shaped from minerals and materials, which are then super-heated to create a strong, hardened material. Terracotta pottery uses clay to form the ceramic, but there are many other types of ceramic, including porcelain, brick, stoneware, and even highly-advanced materials for missiles and vehicle armor!

Does it matter where I get my terracotta pottery?

Yes! Though it appears to be a simple process: mix some clay, shape it, heat it up, terracotta pottery can vary in quality fairly significantly. On top of this, to an untrained eye, it can be very hard to visually determine the quality of one terracotta pot versus another. All of these factors need to be carefully balanced and calculated to ensure the highest quality terracotta pottery. It is important that the clay has the right iron content and that it is shaped in a way that will accommodate the plant and resist cracking.  It is also important that the clay is heated to the proper temperature. If it is baked incorrectly, the pot will be brittle and not last. An expert-made terracotta pot can last for generations if properly cared for.
