    Fiberglass Planters In NYC

This selection of modern and durable planters are made of 100% fiberglass. They are extremely lightweight and meet all weight restrictions for NYC rooftop gardens. Pottery King works directly with factories overseas and designs exclusive sizes and shapes. Due to our large inventory and customization, we are able to accommodate all of our customer’s needs.

    Why Choose a Fiberglass Planter?

Fiberglass planters are beneficial for a number of reasons. Primarily, planters made out of fiberglass are preferred due to their lightweight yet sturdy construction. Lightweight planters are easy to move and rearrange in gardens, on patios, or on rooftops to change with the seasons or as desired. You can be sure with a lightweight fiberglass planter from Planter Resource that you are meeting all weight requirements set for New York City rooftop gardens, balconies, and terraces.

If you choose to decorate your outdoor space with your beautiful new potted plants, you will want to be sure that they are protected. Fiberglass planters are weather-resistant, resistant to UV exposure, and most importantly, frost resistant. Fiberglass is strong enough to withstand the elements without succumbing to rust, losing its color, cracking, drying out, or shattering.

The strength of this material allows you to leave your fiberglass planters out in the rain and snow of the New York City Winters, and brightest sunny days of Summer (We can’t speak for the plants inside though! Please research the limitations of your live plants and take them inside as needed) Our fiberglass planters, however, are built to last season after season, allowing you to simply replant and reuse whenever desired without having to replace them.

Even though most are pre-drilled, adding extra drainage holes is always a good idea. More importantly, make sure your planters are up off the ground slightly, this will promote proper drainage. We recommend using our “Pot Risers” for this application. They are 2”x2” rubber squares that go under each corner which will allow for proper drainage. This is a very important step in container gardening.

There are really so many great things about fiberglass planters, but there are a couple of big reasons why everyday gardeners, landscapers, and professional growers prefer them. For example, the fiberglass garden containers are impressively lightweight, unlike metal pots or stone planters. It helps you to quickly push them about in the yard, in the pool, indoors, or on the roof.

They are weather-resistant too. While dry and crack plastic pots, rusting metal planters, and splintering wooden containers, fiberglass pots and plantings are strong enough to withstand the elements. They’re rust-proof, frost-resistant, and shatterproof. That, of course, means that whether it’s snowing, raining, or bright and sunny you should leave the containers outdoors.

Moreover, these robust planters do not lead to UV radiation. This allows you to add style to your garden, patio, deck, sunroom, kitchen, or terrace using colored plantings without having to worry about the fading color or finish. Another explanation of why garden planters of fiberglass are the preferred option is that they are affordable. They don’t have to be updated every few years, either, saving you time! Needless to mention, the maintenance needed to keep your plant containers looking brand new is little to none.

Longevity is one of the key qualities of fiberglass planters. Fiberglass is a tough material by itself. The result is much stronger by adding additional components, like plastic or polymer. When the components are combined, manufacturers can produce one of the most demanding gardening materials. This is why landscapers and garden lovers choose this material because they can survive extreme conditions.

    Garden Planters

Does Your Garden Planters Need Drainage?

Yes! We will always recommend the selection of drainage planters and pots, especially if you are testing the water in your watering capacity. It’s absolutely possible to render planters with a little finesse without drainage. It’s best to try to pour no more than 1/3 of the bottle capacity into the bowl. You may also line the bottom of the planter with lava rocks or anything close to create crevices for excess water to flow into. These methods will definitely help to reduce the chances of root rot.

    What About Garden Planter Size?

When we speak about plants, we sometimes refer to them in sizes or inches. This does not apply to the planter at all but refers to the diameter of the planter pot in which it is grown. For example, a 4 “plant refers to a plant growing in a 4” diameter pot, regardless of the size of the plant it comes in a 4 “high x 4” wide pot. These measuring criteria are used to manage variation of height and plant forms. A cactus that fits into a 4 “pot can be 1″ or 1 ft. tall. When choosing a pot, choose a pot that is 1-2″ larger than the current pot size if the plant is currently in a 10” pot or smaller. If your current pot size is >10”, choose a pot that is 2-3” larger in diameter.

    Should You Repot Your Plants?

First things first: repotting doesn’t quite involve changing the current planter of a plant, but instead changing the soil or potting mix. Fresh garden soil nutrients that are different. If you enjoy your present planter, this is wonderful news, but if you want to buy a new one, that’s good, too. Try to maintain the scale no more than 3 “larger in diameter for tabletop planters while you are changing planters, and no more than 6” larger in diameter for ground planters.

Your new planter can only need to be an inch bigger if you’re repotting a very small plant! The size here is significant because we will usually be more likely to water more frequently as we move our plants to a bigger pot with more soil. A tiny plant with an oversized planter and plenty of soil with too much water means murdering your plant unintentionally. You don’t want your plant to float in the dirt, but rather have a little extra space for the year ahead to expand.

It’s always a little fun to get dirty and, most importantly, it’s good for your plant. When you buy a new plant, it is possible that it has already overgrown. Overgrown plants look bright and new from the greenhouse, but without careful repotting, the plant would die in attempts to match the plastic jar you came in. Thus, repotting your plant also gives it a fresh potting mixture to grow in. Not only will the plant be able to sustain its existing height, but it will also be able to grow bigger. Initially, repotting doesn’t always mean going up a pot size. Repotting could mean changing the old potting mixture that has degraded the nutrients.

Obviously it depends on how vigorously they grow, plants usually need to be repotted every 12 to 18 months. For years, some slow growers may call the same pot home, but they would only require replacement of the soil. Springtime is typically the perfect time to repot your houseplants, before the beginning of the growing season.

If you see one of these signals or a combination of them, you’ll feel it is time for repotting:

    • At the base of the planter, roots expand into the drainage hole.
    • The plant is being pulled up by roots from the planter,
    • Plant growth is slower (different from winter dormancy) than average.
    • The plant is incredibly strong and quickly falls over.
    • The plant dries out quicker than normal and needs more regular irrigation.
    • Plant pieces take up many as three times the pot area above ground.
    • A significant build-up of salt and minerals on the plant or planter

Here’s what you want to have handy:

    • Your new houseplant, naturally,
    • The planter in which you’re potting
    • New blend for potting
    • Lava rocks or equivalent (if your planter does not have a drainage hole)

    Steps To Start Repotting Yourself!

Drop a plant from an existing pot

Switch the new plant sideways, gently grasp it by the stems or leaves, and before the plant slips out, touch the bottom of its current container. With a couple of soft tugs on the base of the roots, you might need to give it some support.

    Loosen the source

In your palms, loosen the plant’s roots softly. You should prune off some extra long threadlike roots, just make sure that the thicker roots are left at the base of the foliage. If your plant is root attached, the roots expand along the base of the plant in very close loops, unbinding the roots as best you can and giving them a trim.

Delete the old potting mix from the

Remove around one third or so of the plant’s surrounding potting mix. Your plant absorbed some of the nutrients in the present mix as it expanded, so if you’re potting it anyway, you’ll want to give it a fresh mix!

Add a new blend for potting

Through the new planter, pour a coat of fresh potting soil and pack it down, eliminating any pockets of air. Before applying the potting mix, layer the bottom with lava rocks or the like (rocks, dirt, etc.) if your new planter does not have a drainage hole. The purpose is to create crevices, away from the roots of your plant, for the excess water to pool in.

    Add plant to plant

Set the plant you removed from the growing pot in the new planter on top of the fresh layer of mix, make sure it is centered, and apply the potting mix around the plant until it is healthy. As you want the roots to breathe, make careful not to pack too much dirt into the planter.

    Water and Please Enjoy

Water well, even out the potting soil on top, and enjoy!

If You’re Interested in Terracotta Planters, We’ve Got Plenty of Options

Terracotta is a very popular form of pottery; it is a brownish-red material that is clay-based. It’s great for both outdoor and indoor plants. From basic terracotta planters to unique ones, we’ve got your plant needs covered. To decide the best option for your plant, take a look at the surroundings. Question what will look best for the plant and how the plant and its roots will spread. From there, you can decide what to choose. Consider our multitude of terracotta options and find what’s best for you and your plant.

    Terracotta Planters In NYC

The classic look of terracotta is what so many other materials try to re-create. Terracotta is made of baked clay. The porous nature of this Earth-based medium allows air and water to pass through the pot’s walls; this promotes healthy plants by minimizing the chance of root rot and overwatering. That can also cause the soil to dry out quickly, though, which means adequate watering is key. Also, the pot can flake and crack if water remains in the clay during freezing weather. Terracotta baked at higher temperatures is the most durable because the clay becomes harder and less permeable. For a high-quality pot that will last for years, look for an even, reddish-brown hue and thick walls.

The following are the pros of terracotta planters:

    • Terracotta porous nature allows for air and water to move through the walls, preventing soil disease and root rot.
    • Terracotta pots can be used for indoor plants and outdoor container gardening.
    • Terracotta containers are great for Cacti, Succulents, and other plants that prefer a drier soil.
    • Terracotta is great for colder climates. The walls of the pots draw the water out of the soil to help the soil dry quicker.
    • They’re inexpensive!
    • They make a beautiful patina that just gets better with age.

    What is Terracotta?

Terracotta actually means “baked earth” in Italian. This is a perfect name, as that’s basically what terracotta is. Terracotta pots frequently appear with a reddish-brown hue. That’s an end result of the extreme temperatures and the iron within clay reacting to the acute warmth. These reactions produce the signature shade of terracotta pots.

Terracotta is one of the oldest varieties of pottery. Archaeologists have observed portions of terracotta which are thousands of years old. Ancient terracotta was baked by being left under the sun to harden, however as technology has improved, potters began using kilns to bake their terracotta pottery.

The uncooked substances used to create terracotta pots are very abundant. It is clay blended with iron oxide and flux. There are many unique varieties of flux substances that may be used, providing different effects. The universal use of flux in terracotta pottery is to create a glass-like structure on the surface of the pottery.

Are Terracotta Planters the Same as Ceramic Pottery?

Terracotta is ceramic, however, not all ceramics are terracotta. Ceramic refers to a hardened material that is formed from minerals and substances, which can be superheated to create a strong, hardened material. Terracotta pots use clay to form the ceramic, but there are numerous different varieties of ceramic, which includes porcelain, brick, stoneware, or even highly-superior substances for missiles and vehicle armor!

Does It Matter Where I Purchase My Terracotta Planters?

Yes! Though it seems to be an easy process: blend a little clay, form it, warm it up, terracotta planters can range in quality pretty significantly. In addition to this, to an untrained eye, it may be very difficult to visually decide the quality of one terracotta pot as opposed to another. All of those elements must be cautiously balanced and calculated to make certain the very best terracotta pottery is produced. It is vital that the clay has the proper iron content, that it is formed in a manner in order to accommodate the plant and withstand cracking, and it is critical that the clay is heated to the correct temperature. If it is baked incorrectly, the pot might be brittle and weak. An expert-made terracotta pot can last for generations if well cared for.

    Our Terracotta Options

We’ve got standard pots if you’re looking for a standard one. However, we’ve also got unique terracotta pots such as the Garden Bowl. A bowl is a great option if your plant needs more room to spread its roots. If your plant wants additional room to spread out its roots, you may consider a Tall Pot. These are longer than the Standard Pot, so there is more room for the plant to grow out. We also sell Window Box planters, which are another unique and great option for your plants. These planters not only allow more room for your plants to spread out, but these planters allow you to plant more. With a standard pot, you typically can fit only one plant inside. But with a Window Box, you have more freedom to add in additional plants.

Along with our Terracotta Pottery, we have a few saucers available for sale. The ones we have are Rectangle, Clay, and Glazed. These don’t have room for plants to grow out, yet they are excellent for displaying plants. Like our potted plants, these saucers can be tailored to a variety of sizes.

    Indoor Planters at Pottery King

Indoor planters are a great option to bring some life to your indoor space! Apartment living has many benefits, but gardening isn’t typically one of them. Indoor planters can be a great solution for working out your green thumb inside your home.

Factors to Consider for Indoor Planters

Before you begin your indoor planting, there are a few key considerations to take into account.

Proper planning before you start is key to success. You must consider the following:

Light – Plants need light. There’s no way around it. The leaves of your plant are like little solar panels. You wouldn’t hang a solar panel in your closet and expect it to provide energy, right?  Certain plants need more light than others, however. Take into account where you would want to display your plants and then consider the availability of lighting. Natural light is ideal, but you can supplement it with artificial lights if you have to.

Water – If you’re already interested in gardening it should come as no surprise that in addition to light, plants need water. It is essential. Water is the means through which your plants receive their nutrients. Using osmosis, the plant is able to absorb the water in the soil, carrying the nutrients throughout the plant. Without water, the nutrients cannot be absorbed and the plant will dry out and die. That doesn’t mean you can just leave the tap on over your plants. Over-watering your plants can cause just as much harm as under-watering.

Air – Plants do, in fact, breathe. Air flow is important to encourage transpiration. Transpiration what occurs when water is evaporated from the inside of the plant. This process is necessary, but if the plant is over or under-watered, the process can be inhibited. Air helps keep moisture from building up on the leaves of a plant. If water lingers on a plant for too long, it can cause the plant to rot.

Humidity – Outdoor humidity isn’t easily influenced, but it is indoors. In general, the inside of your home is going to have lower humidity than outdoors. Cooling and heating systems in your home remove the humidity from the air. With the exception of extreme climates, the air inside your home is drier than the air outside. This can be good or bad depending on the type of plants you are growing. If it is too moist, the leaves won’t dry and the soil can get waterlogged or even moldy. If the air is too dry, the water will evaporate from the soil before the plant gets a chance to absorb it.

Soil – With indoor planters, you must be careful of your soil choice. You want to have a soil that has proper nutrients but is also loose enough for the roots to grow, the water to be absorbed, and air to pass through the plant. You must also consider the risks of pets that could grow in your soil, from bugs to fungus. For example, compost soil, though high in nutrients, can also be a breeding ground for bugs and mold. It is important, if using an indoor planter, to change your soil from time to time.

Potting – Two of the more popular indoor planters are made from terracotta and fiberglass. Terracotta indoor planters are great for providing a classic look that allows for breathability and provides temperature regulation because of its insulating properties. Terracotta does have some drawbacks, however. Because of its porous nature, it is susceptible to staining. Even though high-quality terracotta is quite durable, it can still chip and crack under stress. If these are problems that worry you, you may want to consider a fiberglass planter. Fiberglass still offers insulating properties and is more breathable than plastic or steel, but it is a bit more resilient than terracotta in addition to being lighter weight and stain-resistant.

Whatever your indoor planter needs may be, Pottery King will ensure that you are taken care of. We are pottery experts and carry a wide variety of designs and styles to compliment your plants and your home. Call us today and bring your home to life!
